Battlefield Intel: The Creators of Pokemon Go! are Working on an Augmented Reality Harry Potter Game

I remember when Pokemon Go! came out, people would say things like “Wouldn’t it be great if there was a game like this for *insert franchise here*!?”  Well guess what Harry Potter nerds, much like John Cena, your time is now….or in the future, I should say.  Niantic, the company behind Pokemon Go! has partnered with Warner Bros. Interactive, who owns the video game rights to the Potter universe, to deliver this product sometime in 2018.  In an online press release posted less than 48 hours ago, Niantic had this to say about the project, “We’re incredibly excited to announce this next step in the evolution of AR mobile entertainment. With Harry Potter: Wizards Unite, players that have been dreaming of becoming real life Wizards will finally get the chance to experience J.K. Rowling’s Wizarding World. Players will learn spells, explore their real world neighborhoods and cities to discover & fight legendary beasts and team up with others to take down powerful enemies. We’re thrilled to partner with Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, and WB Games San Francisco’s development team to bring this magical and beloved series to life in a brand new way. Harry Potter: Wizards Unite will leverage the full stack of the Niantic Platform while also providing an opportunity to pioneer all new technology and gameplay mechanics.”

While there aren’t a ton of specifics to be had at the moment, I’m sure that’s more than enough promise to get any potter fan excited.  I was sort of in and out of the last two projects Niantic put together, ingress and Pokemon Go!, as they didn’t have a ton of features to mess around with.  However, this sounds like it has some promise well beyond those other titles.  Happy casting!
